Today @erant made the provocative statement ,"the notion of privacy is tightly related to the idea of the city". Supported it by citing Georg Simmel's 1903 "The Metropolis and Mental Life". As a fan of the fin de siècle I found it particularly interesting.

Much privacy is just anonymity, or even pretense: there's a tribe that lives in big communal roundhouses, which constructs privacy by scrupulously pretending they can't see anything someone does while facing the center.
