The press accuses tech companies of putting money before principles. But the press does this too. Just for way less money.https://twitter.com/jayrosen_nyu/status/1066116351729782784 …

Haha. The risk to return ratio is also very less. If a media company screws up, people don't really care. But, if Amazon or Facebook do it, they are suddenly woken up by the whole principal vs profit debate.

It's not an excuse to behave badly, but it is a reason the press should be more modest, morally, when attacking companies they think have. If the headlines were honest they'd say "Company X is almost as bad as us."

Absolutely. What it takes to manipulate press and journalists is very little money. This happened in India through the famous Cambridge Analytica scandal. 2-4 lakhs in INR is like 3-5k USD. Multiple journalists were simply paid to plant and create #fakenews. Where the hell are the #principles? No journalistic or media principles. Money trumps.

This isn’t quite true. The caravans are objectively newsworthy, but parts of the press downplayed them for political reasons.

Press needs to be non-profit and funded by communities so we unshackle it from the personal agendas it is wedded to today. Every household could contribute x a year to fund the operations of its community’s press and those in turn pool to fund press at a national level.
