There are two places to find new ideas: places no one has looked before, and places where people have looked, but not hard enough. Kids are taught that big ideas come from the former, but the latter may actually be more promising.

CONNECTIONS is also an all-time favorite of mine; I remember it with tremendous fondness. But THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED is perhaps even more ambitious, since its focus -- on fundamental science, rather than technology -- is certainly more abstract, and probably more profound.

I bought the DVDs and try to get my kids to watch them. They are still useful but definitely could use a

Watching it now for the first time, I'm surprised to see that it asks the same questions we keep discussing on HN daily. Like, one episode was quite explicit about the extent computer proliferation is reducing individuals to numbers in prediction algorithms.
