What is something important and obvious about a place once you’ve been there that you couldn’t have easily learned (or at least didn’t) just from reading about it?

Buildings in Venice don't encroach on the space between them to anything like the extent they do in other cities that old. Clearly there was a strict rule about this, and always a city government powerful enough to enforce it.
