I recently re-read Robert Merle's Les hommes protégés and thought there is NO way this would be published today.
And it is *so good* (and politically inappropriate)!!!
We will look back wistfully on the racy, funny, politically incorrect works of the 20th Century the same way the Victorians looked back wistfully at Shakespeare and Fielding.

Western writers are freer than ever to publish 'politically incorrect' works. Shakespeare and Fielding worked under conditions of censorship, where the state decided which plays could be performed. State licensing of plays only ended in the UK in 1968
