It’s a performative medium. Kind of like how when being publicly interviewed, one doesn’t optimize responses for the interviewer alone.

The word "anyone" seems to make that an overly strong statement; there are people who simply don't know how to use the medium. But I'll agree with "some" and offer myself as example: Much like on IRC, I'll hold discussions publicly when I anticipate that others can contribute.
-
If your comment is directed at people who hold conversations in public and then pretend that said conversations were private when others join in: Right, that's absolutely disingenuous and I wish it would stop.
-
people like that see Twitter as a sort of propaganda theater. The audience is supposed to see, but not contribute. Of course Twitter does not work that way, so those types of people get super asshurt

That's why I've always said why not just not make it unlimited and have the same number of characters passing by in the tweets so that the cosmetic is the same? By the way have you read Gilder's "Life After Google" What do you think about it?
@Scobleizer -
I haven’t read it. Added it to my reading list.

I do this a lot because Twitter allows me to have conversations those who share my passions but we don’t know each other personally to know email or contacts. Helps expand my research w/o limiting to those who I’ve connected because of work or my students w my bias.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Truth. My email is scobleizer@gmail.com if you wanna talk. My smartphone is +1-425-205-1921. I do tend to do my rehab work one-on-one, or by attending small meetings. Being intimate and open about failures, er vulnerable, on Twitter is hard for sure.

What kind of rehab work

I am an alcoholic.

Thanks for sharing ...I think we all have some kind of addiction ... I think I have one too, I called it an attachment. It is good we are aware that we have it, for some they are not even aware they have it.

I lamented earlier today that Twitter reminds me of a HS popularity contest with certain folks only interacting upward. I dislike when people feign wanting to interact (posting a question or eliciting a response) but actually just want to signal that they are getting attention.
-
That's because some people use Twitter like LinkedIn. I prefer to use it like a blackhole.
