It’s interesting to think about where YC would be without HackerNews. Probably less relevant today, but having the ear of all the nerds for $0 was likely a serious advantage in the early days
It's worth a lot, but I'm still not sure it was net worth it, because it was about 50% of the total stress of running YC. (Never start a forum.)

As a single anecdata point, I first learned about YC through HN. Bay Area founders are exposed to YC from a dozen different sources, but I imagine HN does a lot to drive awareness among non-Valley founders.
