It's safe to believe the people the people you believe are smart believe are smart are smart, but not safe to trust the people the people you trust trust.

I realize this sentence is hard to understand. I wrote it this way because it seemed hard to understand in an interesting way. So hard to understand that I got it wrong myself the first time! Thanks to @Benjie for this corrected version.

Explanation: some qualities (e.g. intelligence) include the ability to judge that quality in others, and some (e.g. trustworthiness) don't.

Had to read it 3 times to get it, but, yes, good point in there.

A trustworthy person can misjudge someone else's trustworthiness... right?

Without your explanation I didn't understood. Nice point, and completely true, unfortunately. We all think that others are just like us...

Oddly enough people mix this up all the time. Since both traits are judged subjectively, based relative to the actual judge, the outcome is likely to be reversed when the judge lacks intelligence.

I think it’s also the case that intelligence is rarely turned on and off for particular counterparties but that is unfortunately not true of trustworthiness. Someone can truthfully and accurately claim “X has always been forthright with me” of someone who’d happily cheat you.

Also true that definitions of ‘smart’ vary more between different people than definitions of ‘trustworthy’ though

Fitting, the sentence is sufficiently difficult to understand, that it might get the message across to the right people, and the opposite to those who misunderstand it, resulting in what we hope is the desired behavior across the board.

What happens when you break trust up into trust of competence and trust of character or integrity? Can those with either identify it reliably in others?

Trustworthiness is proven over time generally, whereas intelligence can be demonstrated quickly in some areas. Either can be gamed to fool people sometimes.
