    Thanks to Jake, many former Gothamist and DNAinfo employees do not have and/or can not afford insurance to pay for mental health care.

    Mental healthcare in this country is so fundamental broken and access to it is prohibitively expensive. It is near-universally a luxury even for those of us who make substantial salaries. Many people would like to "seek help," as is the phrase, but have no means of access.

    The only thing we can do is make sure those struggling with addiction know that we love and support them. I did that a lot, and I wonder if I did it enough, but ultimately we must do what we can do out of love and kindness and responsibility, everything we can.

    Losing someone to addiction absolutely sucks. Because they did not deserve it. They did not deserve having their mind and their body working against them at every turn. But we don’t get to choose.

    Addiction is a heartbreaking disease that will make you want to hate the person who has it. But you shouldn’t, as hard as that might seem sometimes. Be kind, and know that the person probably realizes they hurt you and others, and they wish they didn’t.

    Is this a joke? You have to be kidding me. “TERF” is a neutral descriptor that could be applied to people of any age, race, gender/gender identity, or sexual orientation. TERFs are merely transphobes using a veneer of feminism to make it socially acceptable.
