If an algorithm has "mastered natural language", I would expect it to be able to do some of the things language is for -- communicating information, receiving information, acting on the world... Not merely output something that statistically sounds like language.

Reflecting on , the tech is really awesome and all, but what stands out is the community. I kept hearing again and again how this conf and community are really uniquely welcoming, friendly, supportive, etc, and it's so true. I'm proud to be a part of it.

Learning about Bayesian IRT () and am intrigued how, with multiple items, the model decomposition yields person- and item-specific results. Is it correct that one could return person-specific effect sizes in a 2-time point trial with this method?

Reminder that I'm looking for a postdoc who wants to work on Bayesian methods, probabilistic programming, and Bayesian workflow, in an environment which has a lot of related activity ongoing. Flexible starting time and duration of stay. You can ask also before finishing your PhD.

Fellow and users: If you haven’t yet, check out the Stan Forums (). It’s a great resource of fellow modelers, ranging from novice to expert. E.g., this morning I’m having some deep appreciation for the section ().

Revised Rhatv5 and ESS paper (me, , , Bob Carpenter, ) now in . We've tried to improve clarity and added more details, references, and relations to other algorithms. Only minor changes in the algorithm code.

I have a theory that these terrible (and often wrong) hot takes are actually designed to get people to stop caring about combatting climate change altogether. I promise climate scientists don’t actually care that you just binged The Expanse. Half of us did, too.

In every session of , a PhD student tells me that they don’t have time to sleep, exercise, or socialize because they have so much work to do. I tell them that’s like saying they don’t have time to put gas in their car because they have so far to drive.

New loo CRAN release has LOO with subsampling and approximations to posterior distributions which make LOO much faster for large data. See a vignette for examples and references.

Friendly neighborhood biologist here. I see a lot of people are talking about biological sexes and gender right now. Lots of folks make biological sex sex seem really simple. Well, since it’s so simple, let’s find the biological roots, shall we? Let’s talk about sex...[a thread]
