NEW: Boris Johnson says UK will continue to dispute Mauritius’s claim to the Chagos Islands, after we missed UN deadline to hand them back. They are home to crucial US air base on Diego Garcia. UK has ruled them since 1814 but almost every other nation supports Mauritius’s claim.

It wouldn't be a surrender. If the people of those lands want to be self determining then they would be granted that right. Gibraltar and Falklands have had referendums on this and want to remain British. Chagossians haven't been given that opportunity.
