Ken Thompson’s Unix Philosophy says: “Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface.” Not saying I agree (I’m not wise enough to have an opinion), but maybe that was part of the rationale?

Does SQL predate Unix? I think so but it's murky. Though the drivers for SQL DBs are certainly unix-y so it could be to blame for sure

Check out C# LINQ SQL— imagine if SQL were part of your regular (eg. Python) code, instead of a string inside it. There's no reason your SQL couldn't theoretically be syntax checked and type checked with the rest of your program.
