How much money laundering & tax evasion should we accept in order to enable low-friction transactions? I suspect neither extreme is optimal.

@paulbaumgart: Square Cash (and the financial rails it uses) is low-friction, low cost, and maintains an accounting trail.

@numist How about account setup friction? Can a homeless person with a smartphone accept Square Cash donations?

@paulbaumgart: Assuming they have a debit card, they don't even need the smartphone. Interface is email.

@numist A lot of that setup overhead is anti-money laundering & tax evasion regulations. Which was my point. Too expensive to bank the poor.

@numist But purely depending on voluntary reporting is also unlikely to be a good idea.

@numist Getting a (cheap) smartphone is much easier than getting a bank account for those below some not-even-that-low wealth threshold.

@numist Ditto for businesses. Have to file a bunch of paperwork and pay $$$ first.

@paulbaumgart: At present, no other way to move money without moving paper. Setup may be heavy, but you asked for low transaction friction.
