It's not enough to loudly proclaim something is broken. You also need to know how it broke in the 1st place to avoid repeating the mistakes.

A good starting assumption: the creators of the "broken" thing were well-intentioned & made sane decisions given the info available to them.

The trick is to try and figure out either what information you have that people previously didn't, or how the underlying facts have changed.
