Maybe accommodation was the best we could have done. Maybe nothing we could have done would have made China more free. Maybe having our IP stolen was ultimately good for global growth. Maybe China's mercantilism wasn't that devastating. We'll never know, will we?

IMO it was reasonable if only for humanitarian reasons, but after 2012 became increasingly counterproductive. Hopefully in 20 years, when this generation of Chinese leadership (who, notably, have never known a world w/o the CCP in power) dies off, things will turn around again.
