I bought THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA the day it came out, while the bookstore owner pleaded with me to buy something else instead. Will always capture the spirit of 2004 for me.
It’s funny how we can grow nostalgic for the neuroses of our youth.

In some ways yes. But it really was a time when we went into what I thought at the time (and was vindicated about) was an obviously disastrous war for no good reason, and we were embracing torture, and etc., with repercussions we still live with.

I thought it was notable and even laudatory that Trump felt the advantage of claiming to be an anti-war candidate in 2016. Gave a number of people permission to finally concede the obvious—that the war was a disaster.

but the fascistic right in the book is anti-war! I still think book parallels 2016 reality better than 2004 (e.g. America First themes, celebrity candidate, step-by-step erosion of norms, etc.)

Ok, got it. Yeah, I now can’t remember how much reviewers at the time commented on the irony that of an anti-war movement being mapped onto the pro-war side.

i've got it years ago, but only read it for the first time this year. its quite unsettling (with all the caveats, that no, we are not descending into fascist dictatorship under T.). I'd recommend you reread it. i didn't like the ending tho. very deus ex machina. :I
