Assuming they could find a job in a lower cost area, is the desperate desire by many upper middle class Americans to live in the most expensive area they can (barely) afford reasonable (because much of US is derelict/rapidly disintegrating) or crazy?

It's not all blood, but in the hinterlands there is an adverse selection as the talented & promising are stripmined & captured by the big competitive places that better reward their potential, while the passive, indifferent & dysfunctional stay behind to bully you & your kids.

Higher education = most relevant institution doing brain-drain strip-mining. After that, how many go home to work in local eds, meds, retail & social services that make up most important employers in these places? Instead: Sex in the City = 21st Century Prince Charming's Ball
