Assuming they could find a job in a lower cost area, is the desperate desire by many upper middle class Americans to live in the most expensive area they can (barely) afford reasonable (because much of US is derelict/rapidly disintegrating) or crazy?

Anyway, it’s an important question obv. If there’s a non-negligible TFR diff btwn the big city strivers and mid city thrivers, what’s being selected? Right-sized ambition or asabiya? Or something darker, like complacency?
