Francis Fukuyama tells Klein late in the show that it should be possible to discuss reducing legal immigration to the US, & that the 1924-65 immigration pause did help assimilate immigrants. Worries about polarization/lack of assimilation. Klein demurshttps://art19.com/shows/the-ezra-klein-show/episodes/0794c79c-4943-45ad-998f-2b9c8546a5fb …

What's your thoughts on this? The American experience 1924-1965 seems to suggest that it is possible to reduce and regulate immigration for extended periods of time - if there is political will. Would a similar solution today help Western countries absorb all the newcomers?

The political will to do so in the 20's was explicitly predicated on fear of Anglo whites being eroded in population and power. Which is not the best precedent for those arguing to redo the 20's idea, as much as I am sympathetic to the higher intermarriage, higher AA wages, etc.

Not the best precedent practically speaking? Because it makes sense for the present, the sublimation of ethnic fear into a new civic identity.

Oh I think it can be very practical, especially if you're trying to win Midwestern states with a new Latino population growing. But when a lefty says "This isn't about immigration policy for everyone's interest, this is about race-baiting and fear", doesn't help to cite 20's.
