Do pumpkins really have such a cultural association? I don't think so and looking at Google results, it seems that no one had made that connection before that 2015 article. It seems that the association originates from that article.

That already super-obscure reference was made even more arcane by the explanatory-clip being in German. *the setting for movie (Blue in the Face) was 'a smokeshop in park slope', and it was all about vignettes of 'complex intersection of cultures' common in Brooklyn. Good movie

This is exactly the kind of 90s movie i should like but will probably hate...will still check it out tho, thanks

It gets even more complex: 1) it wasn't an intentional, scripted movie. it was created from scenes improvised, then cut from the movie "Smoke", which were later assembled into its own 'sequel' movie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_in_the_Face …
-
2) the story for "Smoke" was itself basically a very thin Paul Auster short story expanded into a feature film by throwing lots of characters together and seeing what happened. Its better to watch Smoke first, then BITF as chaser, because it expands on all the same characters
