Both Meteor Man and Blankman were great. I don't know why but there was a brief moment for silly black-themed superhero comedies from 1993-1994. (Pootie Tang was a decent bid to revive the trend, but alas and alack, there was no follow through.)https://twitter.com/ScribeUndead/status/1030176071575109632 …

Also, Steel was a shit film. Liking that movie doesn't make you not racist. It just means you have absolutely shit taste. I saw another comment talking about Meteor Man as a good superhero movie during that time. Yes, Meteor Man was good. Compared to Steel, it's a godsend.

I think they didn't make enough money. Sometimes when Hollywood really tries to push something it ends up killing the genre because now the shady money men have concrete failures to point to.

Usually those people have one hit and name-recognition. The industry has perversely limited financial innovation and so spends money in an endearingly old-fashioned way with a massive overreliance on the availability heuristic. Greenlight iff can remember similar thing succeeding

This seems right but I have no idea. It seems like you can also get the green light if there's a risk another film co. will succeed with some concept -- hence you see pairs like Deep Impact and Armageddon.

What happened in that case was because an idea was hot it got greenlit independently, and because no one could remember something similar failing it went ahead. It also happened with The Prestige and the Illusionist, A Bug's Life and Antz...

Good list, and there are many others. I guess I could buy that they were all independent, though the temporal proximity at least makes it plausible with each of these that one led to the other.

Could it be that the two studios are run by identical twins?
