Tributes on twitter to Samir Amin, Egyptian dependency theorist. The conclusion to his Eurocentrism (1988) (my summary): "Capitalism is the cause of unequal development. Socialism means (by fiat definition) equal development. The strategy to get there is [handwaving]."pic.twitter.com/cvhUv2z3hj

It’s one thing to note the guy’s death — he was the last of the major dependency theorists after all — but there are people in my TL who have retweeted about him a dozen times. Now THAT is overrating a tedious dinosaur

Pseudo, what’s your opinion of Arrighi?

One fact about Arrighi is that he was Italian. Another fact is that he modified world-systems theory to trace the rise of capitalism to Italy.

well that’s not different from braudel but it is different from wallerstein. the difference has to do with whether cities were part of feudal relations or outside of them (this was a very stupid debate which was extensively had by the transition literature)

In essays Wallerstein glossed the transition to capitalism as a de Lampedusa strategy writ large, which struck me as crazy

From the book The Leopard: “In order for things to stay the same, everything must change”. I haven’t read Wallersteins large works, but he tends to depict transition as if the agrarian feudal lords simply changed tack and became capitalists.

of course the basic problem with Arrighi or Wallerstein is that the "world-system" is a figment of their imaginations
