I’ve been a RN for 35 yrs. I’ve worked at many teaching hospitals & heard many different people use the term provider, incl. MDs. Never once heard anyone object...out loud. I also never knew the history of the term, and I’m sure I’m not alone. Seems like a teaching moment to me.

I had a feeling that was the case. I've talked to the author of this piece as well as several historians & native German speakers.
