Va mi análisis en impresa de febrero: La receta (o una parte muy importante de ella) para el control y la reducción del delito y la violencia en México se está construyendo donde quizás muy pocos se lo esperaban: en las policías municipales.

I read acknowledgments with the same gossipy gusto as the marriages in the NYT. This is a great deconstruction of how the old "thank you for typing" notes now acknowledge more complex care arrangements, and all the power and resource inequalities they still convey about academia

(4/4) This report has Mexico's rate at 27, but official Inegi rate will be higher, ~30. Either way, about 3x higher than in 2007. InSight Crime calls it highest in a century, but per capita rates were probably higher in the 1950s and earlier ()

(3/4) But Guatemala and Honduras rates have been trending down for almost a decade, and El Salvador's rate has fallen dramatically from a horrendous peak of 105 in 2015 (longer-lasting gang truce?).

(2/4) Venezuela's rate fell from 81 in 2018 to 60 in 2019, still the highest in the region (numbers are iffy). The 3 southern Centram countries (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama) remained much less violent than the 4 northern ones (Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador).

How much do grad students make around the world? Thread has answers and points to data that some people have in fact been collecting (I didn’t know either!)

Continuing the tradition of real time field work tweets: This is Medellin, Colombia’s second city. Industrial & commercial hub. Also.... one of the densest and most hierarchical systems of organized crime in the country. We’ve been studying the structures for over three years.

It’s a terrible dilemma for successive city govts: respect the power or even collude with the gangs, and bring down the homicide rate? Or arrest leaders & persecute gangs, & risk a spike in homicides? Here’s Medellin’s homicide rate over time. A hint at what they’ve chosen.

Es una vergüenza el trato que el gobierno de le está dando a los migrantes. Somos un país que entiende perfecto que la gente se va por desesperación. Ahora somos el muro.

The devil’s bargain in São Paulo: allowing 1 gang to operate more or less unchallenged has allowed homicide rate to drop to 7/100k - below many US cities. But they have also become an organized crime monster - with franchises across South America

Today I'm proud to endorse for president. Elizabeth and I share a vision of America where everyone counts. An America where people—not the wealthy or well-connected—are put first. I'm proud to join her in the fight for big, structural change.
