Sarcasm is often protective. It allows you mock the stance another is taking without taking one yourself. You ridicule those who are standing for something without offering an alternative. A culture permeated with it can disincentize all authentic expression.
Yes, but mean/sarcastic humor has an important role for attacking bad elites, deflating the self-important, in a way that makes the elites look weak for disallowing.

Not incompatible perspectives. Sarcasm is an attack from weakness - no skin in the game. Shouldn't be viewed as particularly valuable... or threatening. More signal in the disallowing than in the attack.
