2/ The left is the "champion of the oppressed", and "unites the disempowered". IOW, targeting the vulnerable for recruitment is...their public brand. So when they complain about the alt-right doing the same, it smacks of "how dare our enemies copy our tactics!"

3/ I'm a libertarian, so I hate it when either side offers a simple, false message of hope through zero-sum identity politics. And I hate personality cults because they're opposite to sovereign individuals. BUT I also hate the lies of in-group/out-group tribal politics.

4/ In this case, "Action X is reprehensible, Group Y does X so the Ys are evil" (while ignoring that Action X, when stripped of valence, is a core public strategy of your in-group!). The real meaning is "I hate out-group Y and I'm scared they're copying our strategy X".

It's not "the Right" recruiting that's an issue, it's the Nazis recruiting. Which is pretty explicitly what the alt-Right is, with their conventions straight-arm shouting "Heil Trump" and marches alongside Nazi flags.

One can liken the left quite similarly to communism, which killed far more people. Antifa rallies are more numerous & violent than alt right. The left embraces May Day, a Communist holiday, wears Hammer & Sickles...so, sorry, friend, but you are still missing the log in your eye.

Chuckle. Picked up this relevant article today: https://legalinsurrection.com/2018/02/antifa-group-at-u-of-texas-austin-hosts-program-for-students-with-mental-illness/amp/?__twitter_impression=true …

Yeah, that's pretty creepy to me, for very much the same reasons that I don't like any other violent group doing this. Not good.
-
What do you call a group that enforces ideological conformity, hates its opponents, and is willing to shut down debate with violence or the threat thereof? Hint: It's not "anti-fascist".
-
Pretty sure that one name we've called the *biggest* group of people who used violence to shut down debate with Nazis and fascists was "the Greatest Generation".

The casual moral equivalence undermines your point.

1/ Frustrating to read about this for
@jordanbpeterson, who is clearly not aligned with the alt-right. In the recent Vice interview he said his message is: Grow the hell up. Take your place in the world. You've got something to contribute. Make a plan. Live as an individual ... -
2/ Stay away from the identity politics pathology. Its just an excuse for failing to live your life in a respectable and Noble manner...

It's concerning that
@jordanbpeterson can be and is being used for cross purposes, likely through outlets like YouTube where clips get selectively curated/edited and remixed to create a message out of step with broader context.

Nobody in the mainstream can meaningfully and legitimately attack this "pipeline" without engaging the issues. As Pinker pointed out there is a lot of low hanging but dangerous fruit. If you want to avoid one side taking advantage then step into the arena. So far no bidders. 2/2

It is rather obvious that there will be overlap among them in terms of content and connections. They are after all addressing some of the same real issues that are either ignored by others or addressed from a completely different(and perhaps erroneous) perspective. 1/2
