    "Hero or heroine" is pronounced "heero or hairoine". So, how about "heeroine" as the short gender-neutral term?

        I've never pronounced the feminine "hairoine". For me it's "heeroine" = "Wonder Woman and co", "hairoine" = "very nasty drug".
