Their mind also leaps to the worst possible scenarios. I doubt this assumption covers views that are as mundane as viewing sugar as an addictive poison. People assume they are being asked which ideas outside the Overton window are correct.
Endorsing unpopular ideas is often dangerous, even when correct. Most people are rightly scared of it. They are expressing/signaling their instinct to avoid that danger.
