They don't do zero, but it's pretty close to zero on the scale of leftist activism. Tea Party ended up as purely an election play, which the article criticizes as only one part of the playfield.

The comparison of other parts of the right to the NRA was enlightening - That is one of the few righty interest groups outside of religion with IRL interactions that extend beyond attending lectures.
