It would only take a few sentences to effectively introduce the matching aspect. You imply it when describing "signaling X" where X!=status
And it supports your thesis - if X was about X, our expressions of X would not be so context & audience dependent. But they are.

We don't just signal a scalar "status" or "skill", but specific characteristics that potential allies can use to evaluate us as a partner.
