It's natural to be bothered by this, and it can sometimes do some good to fight back. However, the medium of Twitter is very different from academia (& even blogs), such that defense against slurs accomplishes much less good and thus is worth doing much less often.

But if someone makes an accusation and you don't deny it, will others take that as assent to the accusation? Thats pretty common in human history, hard to believe twitter has made the effect disappear.

Spend your time having interesting, honest, unusual thoughts, as you do so well, not arguing with boring, dishonest, staid people, whose minds you will not change (nor their followers).
