Biggest inconsistency of TOS vs later Star Trek: Even less subtle analogies, like alien civilizations with American flags and the constitution. A space opera with copies of earth civilizations with key changes in history would be very interesting, it just needs to be explained.
Have you read the Harrington series? Space Opera loosely based on Napoleanic wars, combined with some modern anti-commie, pro-Christian attitude.
A remember picking it up once or twice when I was younger, it didn't suck me in like the Forever War, Asimov & Heinlein's stuff or later the Vorkosigan Saga. Is it worth revisiting?
If you didn't like the first book or two, then don't continue, it doesn't improve from there. I also would never claim it's as good as the stuff you cite; but then again not much is, so I still found it worth reading. Umm...my next recc in cat would be the Torchship trilogy.
