Like many young people, my daughter's eye is sometimes drawn to clothes by sparkle rather than style; brightness rather than smartness. So today at the mall I made up a game I called "Tacky vs. Tasteful".

If I give my daughter freedom to do so, she'll dress herself like a refugee from 1964.pic.twitter.com/yKM7USYV57

Cute though!

That was from 2 years ago and her taste has improved. You can get away with stuff at 5 that in later life will look ugly.

I tend to avoid the word "tacky" when I'm around little girls; can invoke judgment of other girls who might wear shiny pieces. Better to be more objectively descriptive and stick to "too shiny". Also, love using a Pinterest board to guide their eyes irl for similar pieces.

Taste is long term. Tackiness is short term.
