Some things about the past we've rightly moved past, like lynching, hotpants, and double-digit inflation. But strong, proud families ensuring the survival of humanity by keeping TFR>RR are not an anachronism, they are necessary for our survival. https://www.wsj.com/articles/yes-we-really-do-want-to-have-a-fifth-child-1535122603 … via @WSJ

Far-outside-Overton-window idea: family/household of e.g. 4 adults, being one stay-at-home-mom and three wage-earners. As far as I can tell, the only drawback is the 6 person-person compatibility checks, but perhaps the lower stress (no double yoke!) helps with that.

Huh. I worry about stability due to a) humans strong monogamous instincts (poly is not stable) and b) humans strong bio-parenting instincts: If it's two couples, working mom's kids may be sad. But it could work. Homeschool collectives could become this.

Even further from the window: I didn't say the working m̶o̶m̶ had kids. Childcare scales such that e.g. 2+3 does worse than 0+5 on several criteria. Specialization FTW! Put differently, it's not insane to cut "woman" into two sets of social roles (genders?) ("queen"—"worker"?).

I totally agree on splitting women into earners / parents. Can you elaborate on the structure a bit more? Is this society wide (half of families DINK, half worker/parent)? Or do pairs of couples join up?

The latter, because not everybody would like this arrangement (e.g. not-Mormon religious people). And most of the point is in having a stay-at-home-mom in the household—a DINK household is financially brittle, still has the double yoke, and has no community-building valence. 1/2

Furthermore, more than two adults per household would be a good deal even with a sane, undistorted housing market. AFAIK even DINK households have about as large living/dining rooms, kitchens, etc. as couples with children. (Maybe it's not so in the US.) 2/2

Inflation has made it tougher to have a lot of children. Back in the day with a strong dollar wives didn't even have to work.

I would put it on broader economic changes than inflation, but yes, for a variety of reasons (economic, social, spiritual) it is much harder to have a one-working-parent family today. Which should be treated as an existential threat, but isn't.

Sounds like you're at the stage of maximizing grandchildren. Could also do mentoring work, lead Girl Scout troops, etc - there are other ways besides spawning to contribute to the next gen.

Didn't your grandfather ultimately agree with Hayek and wasn't his monetary policy saying how money growth should correlated with GDP growth? Both views are agreeable with eachother.

Setting aside questions of optimal rate of inflation being zero vs GDP growth rate, since we don't & won't have double digit real GDP growth, we definitely shouldn't have double digit inflation.

Check your inbox, you might like the subject I wrote on. I think you could get good marketshare in that market because of seasteading. People would associate you with the two and the marketing advantage would occur because of the correlation.
