Another toxicity factor is actual vs. spurious relevance. Major trends in your profession actually matter to you, while geopolitics (likely) doesn't. Movie plots have "global import" set to 11, because epicness draws attention. The News does the same.
Global/national news, certainly. Local news, not so much. The stuff that happens at your local city council or school board can be immensely important to your daily life and is much more easily affected.

The big problem with local news is that it's a dying industry. Trends in media have led to economies of scale in the news business, which dis-incentivizes local news production. No one wants to pay for news coverage anymore, so there's no business model for it.
