If political extremism is increasing our virtual & physical sorting by moral tribe; this will put HUGE fracturing pressure on political units. Fracturing is RISKY; this means Europe's built-in fracture lines (as seen today w/ diverse migration policies) are a FEATURE, not a bug.

I don't really see it as a long-term direct progression, though. Just a particular (important) effect of specific technological changes. For example, a century ago was an age of greater empires than previously existed.
