Time scale matters a lot. In the near term, the costs of disruptive truths are high and benefits are mostly potential. In the long term, the costs are very bearable and the benefits tend to compound.
You joke, but surely the destruction of comforting lies threatens stability & has huge psychic costs (prime example: religion).
