This reads like another false binary to me. You can do both! ;-) Any human interaction, institutionally framed or not, reinforces and replicates some social norms and belief systems and resists and declines to replicate some others: aka "social engineering".
I consider her a genius of sorts. While interesting for her defence of individualism and honest social relations I find her professional work in the arts even better. Not to forget her enormous erudition. The supreme, independent and original intellectual of our time.
