This is my 20th year here, and maybe I'm just jaded as to the positives. But if a Schelling point for smart people is littered with feces & needles, has anti-smart person protests, and has growing shantytowns...maybe it's not going to be that Schelling point much longer.

What is a dysfunctional dating/sex norm in SF?
-
The swinging, OneTaste, polyamory, etc. cluster that maximizes novelty & openness and ignores their costs. Maybe good for some people in some life phases, but very dangerous to have a culture that fetishizes it. (Cali version of extreme Bible Belt).
-
That's a norm? I've only met a very few people who were into that stuff...
-
I think it's orders of magnitude more common in SF than other cities.
-
Huh. The poly people I know here are super sweet. The "poly" people I knew in NYC were just regular old urbanites who wanted to sleep around, but wanted to make it sound cool and glamorous.
-
They are super sweet people who are mostly choosing to remove their genes from the future of the world.
-
Their memes die too, parents transmit both. Unless the person produces exceptionally long-lasting content or spends an exceptional amount of time parenting (a teacher, say).

And.....thousands of pounds per day of public shit!

"NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit surveyed 153 blocks of downtown SF...trash littered across every block...41 blocks dotted with needles and 96 blocks sullied with piles of feces." -https://www.nbcbayarea.com/investigations/Diseased-Streets-472430013.html …

Context is important here. Collison wrote this to 10-20 year olds. SF is the place for unique and eccentric young people to thrive. Other places just dampen our light - *unless* we've already gotten enough of the SF experience to be confident going back.
-
Not all unique and eccentric people benefit from the relentlessly pro-open, pro-novelty, pro-tech, anti-Christian, anti-conservative, personal growth obsessed gestalt of the Bay. Some do, some are harmed, some (like me) get both benefit and harm.

What are some of those dating/sex norms you’re referring to?
