Hey,
@KialoHQ, I stopped by your site and landed in an (allegedly vetted) line of argument denying any impact of slavery, Jim Crow era, or decades of discrimination on Black Americans; blaming instead "social ills perpetuated by the Black community." This is thoughtful debate?98 replies 44 retweets 526 likes -

Hi Alexandra, just to clarify, this is a community effort, users are contributing to and managing the discussions, like in Wikipedia. We certainly do not have the manpower to vet the contributions, though when an issue is pointed out to us we will take a closer look. :) 1/

Everybody makes mistakes, so please feel free to contribute and point out the problematic issues. We are no experts on that topic and do not know which claims you are referring to. 2/

Generally speaking we think that capturing problematic lines of thinking and rebutting them, is better than ignoring them and letting them fester in people's minds. 3/

Sunlight is the best disinfectant and we think that we have learned that staying within our own echo chambers isn't helping our societies to thoughtfully engage about the issues that we disagree on. 4/

Having said that, unnecessarily offensive claims should be rephrased with less offensive wording. Perhaps these two tweets by fellow educators will be of interest to you: https://twitter.com/mchorowitz/status/943097535387889664 … https://twitter.com/dustintingley/status/894552075803254786 … DM us for private teams & portals. Thanks for feed-back. /5

There is no way to rephrase that's not offensive because it's the central concept that's offensive. Just like the central concept of arguments re: Confederate flags/statues where people say "let's celebrate aspects of Confederacy" or this re: reparations "we've already fixed it."

That's the core problem with the reasoning behind your platform's existence. When a conversation is about people's right to exist safely and equitably, then there's no "rational" ideas opposing equity. There's moral and immoral. There's the racist status quo or a better future.

The ultimate privilege is the power to define civilized debate. To exclude arguments from even being considered is a brutal act of oppression. The claim that such oppression supports justice is as laughable as 1984's slogan "Ignorance Is Strength".

white dude talks about censorship being the ultimate oppression. It's like bingo -- had to happen at some point in this discussion I guess
