Thank you. I was marked 'absent' the first week of school because I didn't recognize the Americanized pronounciation. I'm just tryin' to live, so I correct people now, unapologetically, and walked across a football field to correct the announcer of my son's Pop Warner game.

I had a sub in high school who was doing attendance, completely butchered my name, looked around and immediately said i was not there. Apparently he thought he was looking for a black girl

I teared up at 3:00. I think about my name a lot. And what it holds and what it means. Our names were given with pride and hope and love. Not meant to be burdens for us from others.

Damn. This hit home. I’m a Black American, but whew chile, did this hit HOME. My folks and I still bump heads because they’re still in survival mode (and rightfully so). But I’m out here trying to LIVE. The White kids growing up got to and we all deserved that. We still do.

My colleague never corrected us when we mispronounced her name until one day, she corrected us but downplayed it and was almost embarrassed for bringing it up. I was MORTIFIED. Your name is your name. It’s all about respect. Don’t be rude. It’s lazy.

I make it a point to learn peoples names. If we can say frikkin Blagojevich's name in Chicago we should be able to pronounce anything
