I've wanted an excuse to profile the @CRTpixels account ever since it made me realize old school pixel art was specifically drawn with CRT technology in mind. Glad I finally got the chance.

Weirdly, as a kid who couldn't afford that many games, especially not expensive SNES RPGs, I'm actually more attached to the cleaner FF6 I emulated on a PC CRT than to the sprites trying to be like the soft TV CRT

-
As someone who played Sonic 3 on multiple Genesis models and on the old PC port I have complicated feelings on this issue (and only VERY recently have come to find, say, scanline filters I don't hate completely)

As someone who used a CRT far, far later than most people, I can say with certainty that these articles (and almost all filters intended to replicate the supposed effect) drastically exaggerate the difference. CRTs varied and high-quality ones didn't produce that ugly blur.

using a CRT very late and having a really nice one is not how most people experienced a CRT!

I feel like the gold standard is Sega Ages CRT vintage mode, it even has warping at the corners and almost gives the monitor this pseudo 3d feelpic.twitter.com/TTufyn9pvI

On the 3DS, the effect was more than just "pseudo" 3D :) But it's a tradeoff between "3D world but perfect pixels" and "accurate pixels in a 3D tube screen".
