Been thinking about the advice we give folks, esp jr and intermediate engineers. I love telling people to go home, have life/work balance, take a vacation etc, but also feel uncomfortably hypocritical. Why am I urging them *not* to do the things that got me to where i am today?

If long hours really are required, it's important to be honest with your employees, even though it will result in some of them choosing to leave.
@JeffBezos set expectations very clearly in his 1997 Letter to Shareholders (and has continued to do so every year since then).pic.twitter.com/EgZquwmrLk

Always good advice to strive for life/work balance, travel etc (though I mostly worked 24/7 in my 20s which I regret) Some advice is out of regret (dont be like me!); other out of lessons learnt (≠MECE) My 2c to fresh grads: Cultivate passion, explore/read broadly, travel
