It’s getting harder to build an internet product that’s available to anyone, anywhere. This is an under-discussed trend.https://www.ft.com/content/6f0f41e4-47de-11e8-8ee8-cae73aab7ccb …

Two questions: 1) Do you think this is a response to particular companies' behavior? 2) If so, will tech CEOs call out publicly their peers they think are messing things up for everyone else?

I think it may actually end up being good for many tech companies—it increases the barriers to entry. Mostly I worry about effects on new players.

that's exactly what it is! internet is wires, towers and data centers. those are physical things that belong to someone -- be it country or business. in 90's in our country we had really fast local internet, but "foreign" net was expensive and slow.

1/ I'm utterly confused by the problem statement here. Is the thesis that #data flow should be free?? It never has been, except at web's inception. It isn't even free within our borders. It's gated behind multiple private corporate silos. Why wouldn't similar silos exist abroad?

2/ It's in each country's interest to: 1) protect/control citizen data 2) give domestic players competitive advantage 3) gain access to surveillance 4) prevent foreigners from such access Again, free flow of data is a befuddling thesis, unless it addresses real-world interests.

In Europe we started using Silicone Valley tech, charmed by grand missions of "connecting people" "making the world more open" etc. We got duped, didn't realise how valuable our data was - financially and politically. Now our data belongs to companies outside our jurisdiction.

My (tentative) view is that the only way to stop this trend is with content-based addressing. Any thoughts on this? Here’s an older post of mine on the topichttps://readplaintext.com/how-ipfs-solves-the-internets-speed-of-light-problem-ab611b2a4d8e …
