Mastodon sounds good. What do you mean by “this instance”? And “privacy scope”?
-
This instance — a particular self-hosted Mastodon server. (It’s federated; a la email, there’s a server-to-server protocol for propagating messages between instances.) Privacy scope: you can set per-“tweet” visibility settings. (Anyone, only followers, etc.)

This is going to be a major trend this year. People creating 'local' spaces for which humans are better suited. There's a reason Slack is succeeding, private groups are Facebook's most loved feature, and email newsletters and podcasts are thriving.

A "great retreat" will occur this year or next, once there is an easily accessible set of tools to facilitate it en masse.
