Theories of human sleep still seem very speculative. I sometimes wonder if there's some function of sleep that's essential to higher intelligence. And if AGIs would need a similar function?

Maybe there's not much evolutionary advantage?

Sleep itself would ostensibly seem to be a severe disadvantage and so less is surely better? But maybe it’s just somehow not as bad as it seems. (Or maybe it’s all more complicated, e.g. “less sleep” trait interferes poorly with certain neurodegenerative condition genes, etc.)

Evolution generally speaking optimizes for not dying and reproducing (ok that’s only mostly true), not necessarily optimum performance

I wish we could have evolved to have unihemispheric slow-wave sleep like bottlenose dolphins. Now that'd be rad.

Totally. Considering how marvelous this would be for parents of a new born baby.

Nonsomniacs only need 1 to 3 hours of sleep. The most extreme case was a nurse who could get by on about 50 minutes a night. Tested at the age of 70, she stayed awake for three days, going to sleep for only 99 minutes on the fourth night. Described here:https://books.google.pl/books?id=EQPeOfmoGDoC&pg=PA216&lpg=PA216&dq=nonsomnia+nurse&source=bl&ots=Er_aIG2RQ-&sig=fJmt4vif3EJOXzyyoxEI-MOkLK8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=xB8TT7-xCIqSiQLpo_HODQ&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=nonsomnia%20nurse&f=false …

Evolution isn't intelligent. It just selects for anything that happens to work well enough to not die before reproducing.

Evolution optimizes for the survival of the species not for the peak performance of the individual. Unless it gives individuals a reproductive edge, it stays. Hence the prevalence of congenital diseases that manifest post reproductive age: diabetes, heart etc

Being awake and bumbling about at night was not a good thing for humans to be doing in age of predators?
