Feels like a lot of online activity is migrating to private groups. Just me? And is it because groups are rising or public commons less fun?

Related: seems like many of us have at some point been part of a great, open-to-all online community. What do good ones have in common?

Not really, the current work great. In fact tools like Twitter are being adopted by people x-discipline. Look beyond tech.

That the current ones work great perhaps suggests that we‘d benefit from more! Should stop when marginal gains from new ones decline…

people don't seem to have time to form an opinion these days. our feeds move faster than the Matrix digital rain

myb a good online community is the one that gives us back a sense of time to think and opinions to form. most social tools don't allow that

Totally agree. Commons has become saturated and zero sum. Before when nascent it was enough to have Commons. Now worry it needs to be shaped

Want to try some small experiments on it and see how much it can be improved

I think this is key. It's not binary. There is a sweet spot. Public discourse is generally good, but major platforms feel like cess pools

We are in dire need of new social tools yes. They will emerge. What we are seeing is as much a reflection on the limitation of our current networks as anything. But the public discourse here on Twitter remains Alive and well.

this is what I liked about what Mastodon tried (is trying?) to do: federation allowed users + community to decide right way/degree
