I hadn't realized that global fossil fuel subsidies are so large. IEA estimates $548B, i.e. 0.7% of global GDP.pic.twitter.com/rN5EBoC8VC

That calculation is based on a pretty naive comparison between prices paid and actual costs. http://www.worldenergyoutlook.org/resources/energysubsidies/methodology/ …

But this could miss indirect support. So Stefanski published a neat paper last year estimating subsidies from historical carbon/GDP ratios.

      Paper: http://www.oxcarre.ox.ac.uk/files/OxCarreRP2014134%281%29.pdf … Conclusion is that it's closer to $1T. I.e., 1.3% of global GDP.pic.twitter.com/cVx8fwDdna

No wonder clean-tech investing sucks. (H/t @pmarca, whose comment made me dig into these figures.)

@patrickc Those figures likely don't include defense spending that can only be attributed to the geographic dispersion of petroleum.

@patrickc @timoreilly does that include all the military operations to keep oil shipping lanes safe for unfettered commerce?

@patrickc @pmarca massive indirect subsidies through military expenditure. Whole thing is a farce. Undermines our future at huge expense.

@patrickc I’m I reading this right? Create a model that fits the data then assume if that model is off for other countries -> subsidy
