This just makes me incredibly sad about the state of our policy and public health systems. Also, don't see any reason why we will not continue to behave exactly in the same asinine way in the future. What will create change here?

I’m all about acceleration, and I’ve been reading what medical experts have been stating as well and their stance is to adopt a lot more conservative stance. There have been instances where mass vaccinations have resulted in issues forcing a recall - https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/concerns-history.html …

IMO it's impossible to address this issue without having a deep understanding of the potential harms that each vaccine could have caused and the prior probability for each of them.

I basically agree. Two points: (1) I have seen very few people willing to actually assert specific numbers/probabilities here. (2) The implicit assumption that these assessments need to be uniform across the population seems questionable to me.

Good read, thanks for sharing. I tend to agree that we don’t weigh the existing mortality enough against the risk of adverse vaccine effects. It’s taking an absolutist approach rather than a risk based approach.
-
We already have a sizable anti-vax movement that would weaponize any suggestion that an approved vaccine is unsafe or ineffective. The cost of making that mistake would be monumental: you can't get to herd immunity if half the population refuses the vaccine.

The Pfizer vaccine was selected among 4 candidates after the Phase I/II trials, how else could they have known which one worked better and how much of it was needed? And if you skip large Phase III trials you risk missing a 1-in-1000 problem that kills more people than the virus

And let's not assume that whatever comes out of a lab is just going to work, we were lucky this time but Sanofi/GSK just had to go back to the lab to reformulate their vaccine. Insane take, honestly

Interesting take. I agree mostly, especially with the wartime mentality. Countries which have needed competent bureaucracies recently are doing a much better job e.g. Isreal is surrounded by counties that hate it. This pressure selects for better governance and administration
