And do you agree that gargantuan efforts are sometimes necessary? LHC may be a bad example but of course even big bets are still bets and there seem to be many other good ones. I am for more heterogeneity and more $.

Also, I'm all for basic research, but the technological return to new fundamental physics has been very low for many decades. Other than the PET scan, I'm not sure there's any technology we actually use QED for. What are we going to use the Higgs for? /grump
